FLORESVILLE, TX is a small town that plays a major role as the county seat of Wilson County. Located southeast of San Antonio, Floresville’s history revolves around ranches and crops and continues to grow year after year. Best known for its annual Peanut Festival , which brings in around 15,000 visitors per year, the town’s nickname is the “Peanut Capital of Texas.”

Floresville’s story began in the 1700s with Don Francisco Flores de Abrego, a Canary Island immigrant. He built his ranch six miles from where FLORESVILLE sits today and it quickly became the base for a community called Lodi.

In 1833, the town included the Flores’s home, a chapel, and a graveyard.

In 1867, FLORESVILLE was officially founded to honor the Flores family and included part of Lodi. Andrew G. Pickett, who owned a ranch complete with irrigation system, began producing peanuts in his fields.

From there, the town grew quickly. A post office was established in 1872; in 1873, FLORESVILLE became the county seat once more. Throughout the 1870s, FLORESVILLE Academy offered some of the best education at the time.

Come 1883, San Antonio and the Arkansas Pass Railway planned for a railroad to pass through the town. Just two years later, FLORESVILLE had two hotels, the Chronicle, a weekly paper, and a population of 400.

By 1890, the town’s population had grown to 1,500 and a five teacher school was operating towards the turn of the century with 206 students.

By 1910 FLORESVILLE had two banks, 1,800 people, and plenty of cotton and livestock to go around. Just five years later, in 1915, peanuts became the cash crop, officially earning the “Peanut Capital of Texas” title.

The first Peanut Festival was held in 1938 and has since become an annual event that draws in thousands of visitors from nearby cities and towns. With a population of over 6,000, FLORESVILLE continues to flourish today.
