HISTORY OF CHEVROLET IN FLORESVILLE, TX
The roots of the brand now known as Chevrolet were planted when William C. Durant, known to friends and colleagues as "Billy," founded General Motors and hired prolific career racer, mechanic, and engineer Louis Chevrolet to be the face of his company during promotional drives and popular races. After Durant was ousted from GM in 1910, he wasn't about to give up, and he honored his collaboration with Louis Chevrolet by founding a new brand and naming it after him: Chevrolet .
CHEVROLET - A RICH HISTORY
The first car to come from the new Chevrolet brand was a luxurious entry offering power and performance beyond its time. In 1911, the Series C Classic Six's $2,150 price tag was the equivalent to a modern-day $50,000 luxury vehicle when adjusted for inflation. The 4.9-liter six-cylinder engine could reach speeds of up to 65 mph and crank out 40 horsepower, a feat relatively unheard of in its day. However, despite the popularity of the expensive car, Durant saw the worth in producing more affordable, entry-level vehicles for the people and moved in that direction.
By 1914, the Chevrolet Model L and Model H were introduced as less expensive entries under the Chevy brand name. It worked; thanks to Chevrolet's precise engineering, innovative engines, and value-oriented pricing, the brand skyrocketed to popularity. Within three years Durant had made enough money to buy out General Motors and put himself back in charge of the company.
