Dashboard Warning Lights

DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS

There's a rather large number of dashboard warning lights on your car, so it's understandable how many drivers might not know what every light indicates. Knowing the most common lights can do you a lot of good and could even save you a good chunk of change at the service department . Having a basic knowledge of dashboard warning lights is better than no knowledge at all. Here's a quick rundown of some of the more common warning lights.

CHECK ENGINE

The "check engine" light is shaped like - obviously - an engine. Three flat surfaces cover both sides and the top of this light. If you see this warning light, it's wise to stop and call for a tow truck. While the problem could be as small as a tiny hole in a hose, it could also indicate a serious mechanical problem that requires immediate attention. Only a professional scanning tool can really diagnose the issue.

BATTERY

This indicator is has minus and plus signs within a rectangle. It generally refers to the voltage level being below normal which indicates that the charging system isn't working right. Drivers can check the alternator belt to ensure it's in proper working order. They can also examine the battery for any signs of disfigurement. At the very least, take a look at the battery's terminals for signs of any problems.

GAS CAP

The "check gas cap" light looks similar to a plug going into a hole. All it indicates is that the gas cap hasn't been properly replaced or isn't tight enough. If the problem isn't rectified, the check engine light will flash as well. If you see this light, simply fix the problem by tightening the gas cap. On rare occasions, the gas cap could be missing entirely which means you'll need to order a new one from a certified dealership or directly from the manufacturer.

ABS

The ABS light says "ABS" within a circle. If you see this light on, your anti-lock braking system may or may not work. It's a good idea to take your car into your local shop so that they can diagnose the problem. If you notice that your ABS light is flashing when you initially start your vehicle, there is no need to worry. Your vehicle is just doing its initial self-check. If the light stays on, that's when there may be a problem.

These are just a few of the most common dashboard warning lights. If you have a light on, stop by Richardson Bros Chevrolet. One of our mechanics will gladly take a look at your vehicle. Stop by and see us in FLORESVILLE near Seguin and San Antonio , TX!
