Stockdale, TX - located just 40 miles south of San Antonio - has a rich history and ever-thriving culture.

Though the Stockdale area was first settled in the 1830s, it was only in the 1860s and '70s that an actual village was formed. There were multiple early names before they settled on Stockdale, such as High Prairie, Free Timber, and Bunker's Store. In 1871, a post office was designated and they needed an official name. In the last days of the confederacy, Fletcher Stockdale had served as the Governor of TX, and they ultimately landed on his last name for the town.

The first industry in Stockdale was Wheeler's Mill, built in the 1870s. Watermelons became a cash crop in the area around 1915. It was such an important crop to the area that in 1937, the community's annual celebration became the Watermelon Jubilee. To this day, it remains one of the oldest Watermelon celebrations in TX.

In 1919, Stockdale's city government was incorporated and a telephone franchise was started. Electricity became available in the 1920s, a water system in the 1930s and a sewage service in the 1940s.Since then, Stockdale has become the thriving community it is now, where there are many fun things to do, such as:

• Jackson Nature Park - A 50-acre natural area located just a few miles south of Stockdale. Only a $1.00 entry fee per person.
• Bain-Chandler Library - You'll find all kinds of books, including new bestsellers, and tons of activities for kids and computers with internet access.
• Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee - This annual festival happens every June. Attend this festival for a weekend of live music and rodeos!
